DO YOU KNOW?
What makes fireflies light up?
The biochemical emission of light by living organisms such as fireflies and deep-sea fishes is called Bioluminescence.
As air rushes into a firefly’s abdomen, it reacts with a chemical called luciferin, (inside their abdomen), and a chemical reaction gives off the firefly’s glow. This light is sometimes called “cold light” because it generates very little heat. Another interesting fact is that the firefly can regulate the airflow into the abdomen to create a pulsating pattern of light.
And lastly, this light that fireflies produce may be green, yellow or orange.
A SHORT STORY
Cheelu Peelu Math tutor
TAP TAPPITYTAP!
Cheelu Peelu taps the pencil on her study table.
“What’s up Cheelu Peelu? You’ve been sitting on this Math assignment for million minutes,” said Dad.
“No, It’s just over one hour,” replied Cheelu Peelu looking at her watch.
“If you need help please ask,” said Dad.
“Okayee! I think I need help,” she sighed.
And finally, Cheelu Peelu completed the assignment with Dad’s help.
At the dinner table, Dad started the conversation, “I think Cheelu Peelu needs a Math tutor.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Yes, you do,” said Dad, “I can’t take out the time to help you everyday because of late office hours.”
“I can help you Cheelu Peelu,” mom said, “but again not every day”.
“We need someone who can help you daily. So, your Dad is right, you need a tutor.”
“No, I don’t!” sulked Cheelu Peelu.
And she turns to her last hope to get her out this tutor mess, “Beeji, please tell mom and dad that I don’t need a Math tutor.”
“But, they are right! You’ll benefit from daily help,” said Beeji.
“Beeji, even you are not with me!” said Cheelu Peelu, and she stomped out of the dining room.
Next week, Mom called “Cheelu, your tutor is here. Come into the room.”
“My legs don’t want to!” replied Cheelu Peelu.
“Then order your legs to walk to the room, Cheelu.”
“Okayee!” Cheelu Peelu dragged herself to the room.
And she saw the back of tutor. As an uninterested audience, CheeluPeelu pulled a chair and sat in front of the tutor, refusing to even look up.
“Open your Math book!” demanded the tutor.
The tutor’s voice was familiar, so Cheelu Peelu briskly looked up.
“What! Beeji, you are my Math tutor!” Cheelu Peelu jumped with joy.
“I love my tutor!
And, I love your new tutor hairdo.”
