Since its inception in 1972, World Environment Day has become a global platform for people from all walks of life to participate in various campaigns to spread awareness about environmental protection. 50 Years of Celebration, Still Way to go!

According to the press release issued with official celebrations held in Stockholm and host country Sweden has announced a ban on issuing new licenses for the extraction of coal, oil, and natural gas from July 1, 2022, to protect people and the planet.

Tens of millions of people worldwide joined global conversations on social media, demanding urgent action to conserve and restore the environment. Tens of thousands organised their activities, including planting millions of trees, cleaning trash, and taking measures to highlight that there is #OnlyOneEarth.

Community Endeavour

Enhancing the spirit of World Environment Day, SUBURB, in association with YI (Young Indians), the youth wing of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), organised a plantation drive by planting about 100 saplings at Zen Golf Range and Academy, spread over 11 acres in Gurugram. Young people have put a critical spotlight on the need to address our current mismanagement of the planet and its resources. “For too long, we have used and abused our earth to meet our materials needs and greed. “We failed to acknowledge the warning signs that have led us to a warming planet, ecosystem collapse, waste-filled oceans and unsustainable resource use. The onus is on us, the adults, to push, promote and lead a sustainable life. If not reverse, try not to damage the #onlyoneearth- our only habitat,” said Shyam Grover, Managing Director, Zen Golf Range.

YI has a climate action agenda to reduce carbon through tree plantation, water conservation and waste management. “The focus on three “R’s”—reduce, reuse and recycle can stop the further degradation of the planet. Learning to Refuse to add material things to our lives is the first step toward making a sustainable living. I practice it personally, said Devir Singh Bhandari author Yuva Bharat and Chair of Climate, YI ( Gurugram Chapter) while addressing the gathering of young professionals and entrepreneurs.

Persevere and Cherish the earth, the only home we have ever known. Let’s protect our only one world,” said Navreet Singh Sehgal, YI, Chair Gurugram Chapter. “Tree plantation aids carbon sequestration and makes our cities more sustainable. YI has a climate action agenda to reduce carbon through tree plantation, water conservation and waste management, added Madhana Ratnavel, National Co-Chair of YI Climate committee.

“Trees have the amazing ability to act as sponges for collecting rainwater and slowly releasing it. Forests around golfing greens are crucial in supporting water systems and providing for carbon sequestration,” said Piyush Garg, National Chair YI, Climate.

“For many decades, it’s sad that the human race is fighting against nature. Not knowing if it will win,  it shall be a lost battle of generations,” said an internationally acclaimed oil painting artist Nidhi Bhatia, who specialises in bringing alive natural colours and landscapes on her canvas.
