Inspiring a New Chapter for Senior Citizens

0

To celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, four organisations in Gurgaon joined hands with 45 senior citizens at the DLF Phase II Community Centre. The event aimed to spotlight the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of senior citizens, foster a spirit of positivity, and spark discussions on innovative ideas and solutions to improve their quality of life.

As India’s elderly population snowballs, it faces significant challenges in addressing their needs. Fifty years ago, people aged 60 and above constituted only 5% of the population; today, that figure has risen to over 10-12%. Improved sanitation and healthcare have significantly increased average life expectancy, but the question remains:

Are we prepared to provide our senior citizens with healthcare and social care? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

India faces a severe shortage of healthcare professionals and caregivers for the elderly. With the erosion of the joint family system, social support has become increasingly scarce, exacerbating the problem. The cost of care is rising, and with many elderly individuals requiring long-term assistance, affordability is a growing concern.

Additionally, there is a critical lack of trained professionals in elderly care, including support services and physiotherapy. Social isolation remains a significant issue, impacting the quality of life for many seniors, even those in good health.

Event Highlights and Organisers

The event was organised by four organisations dedicated to senior citizens’ welfare:

  • Qutub Enclave Resident Welfare Association (RWA): Representing members across DLF Phase I, II, III and IV, this umbrella RWA body plays a pivotal role in community welfare.
  • Lala Jagannath Charitable Trust (LJCT): A non-governmental organisation committed to enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens through various initiatives.
  • Dignity Foundation: A non-profit organisation that empowers senior citizens to lead active lives by providing trusted information, opportunities for productive ageing, and social support.
  • Gurgaon First: A citizen initiative promoting sustainability, inclusivity, and empowerment in Gurgaon.

The event featured an enlightening talk by Prema Nair, Senior Coordinator of the Dignity Foundation, who shared the organisation’s initiatives and accomplishments. She highlighted the Foundation’s operational centre in Gurgaon, located at the National Media Centre, DLF Phase III, and its two centres in Delhi. Prema Nair underscored how the Foundation has empowered senior citizens to rediscover their talents, enhance their confidence, and connect with a community of like-minded individuals.

Prema Nair inspires not only her fellow seniors but also many others. Her dedication to her work and willingness to step out of her comfort zone to learn new skills and technologies have allowed her to realign her life with a greater purpose. As a guide, coordinator, and friend to the members of the Dignity Foundation, she channels her energy into making a positive impact. Prema is also a graceful dancer, singer, cook, and a trained medical nurse with a distinguished career at the Taj Hotel. In her spare time, she enjoys designing necklaces. A true embodiment of multifaceted talent, Prema has captured the hearts of both her peers and younger generations with her unconditional love and compassion.

Kashish Jhamb, Founder of LJCT, discussed the importance of building a solid senior citizen community in Gurgaon. He announced plans to launch ‘Samarth,’ a digital literacy workshop to empower seniors to handle digital devices efficiently and protect themselves from cyber fraud and scams.

Dr Bhrigu Jain from Medanta Hospitals provided valuable insights into Geriatric care and the prevention of diseases in older age. His talk was followed by a light musical programme that added a festive touch to the occasion.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Rama Rani Rathee, Councillor of Ward 34, Gurgaon. She emphasised the need for such programs and initiatives to be organised regularly, ensuring that the senior citizen community feels valued and cared for.

Senior citizen participants expressed their enthusiasm and pledged their support to further this cause, highlighting the importance of community engagement in enhancing the lives of the elderly.
